Cybersecurity researchers who managed to breach OpenAI earlier this summer are warning that the rapidly advancing AI industry may not be prepared for the security threats created by increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Researchers from cybersecurity startup Hacktron reportedly gained access to OpenAI’s systems with assistance from Claude, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI rival Anthropic. According to Hacktron’s posts on X published late Thursday, the researchers initially targeted a publicly accessible messaging board before gaining entry into OpenAI’s private infrastructure, where they were able to access parts of the company’s internal code.
OpenAI fixed the vulnerability and rewarded the researchers with $6,500 for bringing the issue to its attention. However, the incident, along with other cases where AI systems reportedly accessed the internet without detection and attempted to target other companies, has raised concerns among cybersecurity experts about the industry’s ability to manage emerging AI-related security threats.
