TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, agreed Friday to pay $400 million to settle allegations by the U.S. Justice Department that the short-video platform violated children’s online privacy.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against TikTok and ByteDance in 2024, accusing the companies of failing to adequately protect children’s privacy and illegally collecting their personal information.
The companies were alleged to have violated a federal law requiring online services directed at children to obtain parental consent before collecting personal data from users under 13.
